On the occasion of Republic Day, West Bengal, including its capital Kolkata, experienced a surge in winter with the Meteorological Department reporting temperatures below normal. In Kolkata, the minimum temperature plummeted to 13.7 degrees Celsius, four degrees below the average, while the maximum temperature stood at 22.02 degrees Celsius.
This drop in temperature has led to a noticeable increase in cold weather. Not only in Kolkata but also in Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, Malda, and Murshidabad, temperatures range between 11 and 20 °C, indicating cold conditions.
In North Bengal, areas like Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong maintain temperatures close to 10 °C. The Meteorological Department predicts a slight rise in temperature from the upcoming week and anticipates the possibility of light rain within the next 72 hours, offering potential relief from both fog and the prevailing cold.
